Careers in Construction (CIC) trains high school students to meet the high demand for skilled trades jobs and careers. Students earn state and nationally recognized Home Builder’s Institute (HBI) certificates in carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and more. Students can also earn National Center for Construction & Research (NCCER) core certifications at some participating schools.

HANDS ON LEARNING FOR HIGH SCHOOLERS

The Careers in Construction (CIC) program brings skilled vocational education back to high schools. The Associated General Contractors of Colorado (AGC-C), the Housing & Building Association of Colorado Springs (CSHBA), and the Home Builder’s Association of Metro Denver partnered with leading regional educators to address the construction workforce shortage in Colorado to create the CIC program.

The Careers in Construction (CIC) program is administered and funded by the Construction Education Foundation.

SKILLS TRAINING AND CURRICULUM

Students work their way toward Department of Labor recognized Pre-Apprenticeship Certified Training (PACT) certificates which certify them as work-ready in a particular trade, including:

• • OSHA-10
  • Carpentry
  • Electrical
  • Plumbing
  • HVAC
  • Masonry
  • Landscaping 
  • Painting & Finishing
  • Building Construction Technology
• Students learn universal skills including:
  • Problem solving
  • Accountability
  • Organization and prioritizing
  • Teamwork
  • Communication  
  • Time Management
• Core elements of their learning also include:
  • Building trades safety and first aid – OSHA-10
  • Basic construction math and blueprint reading 
  • Tools and construction materials
  • Green building
  • Employability 

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

STUDENTS AND PARENTS:

Students, if you want to take part in the CIC program and attend one of the participating schools, contact your counselor. If you don’t attend a school currently offering the CIC program we will work to get you connected to an existing program. CEF is continuously working to expand the CIC program to additional schools. CIC students are able to directly apply for local internships, apprenticeships, part-time and full-time job opportunities through participating contractors.

VOLUNTEERS AND EMPLOYERS:

You can contribute to our CIC program in the following ways:

• Donate tools or consumable materials
• Make tax-deductible contributions through the Construction Education Foundation 501(c)(3)
• Become a speaker or mentor for students
• Host job site visits and field trips
• Program sponsorships
• Employ students in internships, apprenticeships, or part-time or full-time employment
